Beginner's Guide - Dark Elf

Opening Text for a Dark Elf

They were born to and lived their lives in darkness.

One day, a much-respected member of the tribes stood up as leader to challenge their beliefs and he spoke to them as follows.

"This world must no longer soil our tribe with blood in meaningless wars. Using our own methods, we will defy the ones who have destroyed order in this dark world and replaced it with chaos."

That challenged the core of how the tribes people had lived up until that moment.

Those who followed his ideals ended up being chased away and fled to remote regions. They set up in a location, far from other civilizations, living on the edge of light and darkness...

Having strong attack strength and quick body movements, Dark Elves are a class specializing in close combat.

Setting Up and Starting your Dark Elf

The Dark Elf is one of the most versatile characters in the game. There are quite a few different types of Dark Elves that people prefer to have. I will explain them before I explain the Dark Elf leveling experience.

The key states for Dark Elves (depending on what type you make) are: Wisdom (WIS), Intelligence (INT), Dexterity (DEX), Constitution (CON) and Strength (STR). Wisdom affects how much mana your character will have, and currently the success rate of changing Bring Stones into other components for the specialized Dark Elf weaponry. Bring stones are obtained from Black Blood Stones (please search Black Blood Stones for more information). At an equal importance is your Intelligence, since it is what affects your spell power; how effective your spells are. Dexterity is important in determining how accurate you are with your attack. This is especially important for using a gauntlet or for use with a crossbow. Since the Dexterity starts off as one of the highest stats for a Dark Elf, it's easy to become an effective long-range fighter. Constitution is what gives you the most Hit Points (HP) per level up. The more Hit Points you have, the easier it is to live longer. Strength affects the amount of damage you do to a monster or person and also affects how much you can carry. Since some of the strongest Dark Elf weapons are melee weapons, strength can be very helpful for taking down large mops.

The base stats that you get for a Dark Elf are as follows with 10 extra points to distribute:

  • Strength: 12
  • Dexterity: 15
  • Constitution: 8
  • Wisdom: 10
  • Charisma: 9
  • Intelligence: 11

The distribution of these 10 points are up to you based on what your playing preference is from the stats mentioned above. The stats that I would suggest are as follows:

  • 18 Dexterity, 15 Constitution = A Dexterity Dark Elf with good accuracy, and good constitution
  • 17 Strength, 13 Constitution = A Strength Dark Elf with decent HP.
  • 18 Strength, 18 Dexterity, 11 Wisdom = Good ranged/melee attack with slightly improved purify stone
  • 18 Strength, 16 Dexterity, 13 Wisdom = Good melee attack, ok ranged attack, better wisdom.
  • 16 Strength, 18 Dexterity, 13 Wisdom = Good ranged attack, ok melee attack, better wisdom
  • 13 Strength, 16 Dexterity, 18 Wisdom = Most MP, ok ranged attack, high success rate at purify stone.

Dexterity/AC Bonus

As a bonus, as you level, you will gain extra AC. This is determined by the base Dexterity that your character has. The formula is as follows:

Dex 18 = Every 4 levels you will receive -1 AC
Dex 16-17 = Every 5 levels you will receive -1 AC
Dex 13-15 = Every 6 levels you will receive -1 AC
Dex 10-12 = Every 7 levels you will receive -1 AC
Dex 7-9 = Every 8 levels you will receive -1 AC

Other Bonuses

+1 "to hit" for every 3 character levels
+1 Melee-only damage for every 10 character levels
Base Magic Resistance (MR) at level 1 can go from 10-20. This will change on the amoutn of wisdom that was added.

Getting Started

Now that you have chosen your stats, here is a basic guide on how to level up your Dark Elf. Please note that there are many different preferences on where to hunt; this is just our opinion.

As a dark elf, you will find yourself in Silent Cavern. This is the beginning area of the game for Dark Elves. Dark Elves have a choice of leveling areas for the beginning. You can speak to Enya, a teleportation NPC, to teleport to Hidden Valley, or you can proceed to the south to find the Dark Elf Village and Silence Grounds. Personally, I recommend Hidden Valley for the initial leveling because there are NPC's in Hidden Valley that will haste you for free, and cast enchantments on your armor and weapons for a small price. Very useful until you can cast these spells yourself. I would recommend looking around as much as you can to familiarize your self with the surrounding land and landmarks. Talk to some of the NPC's to find out their function and get a hang of the game.

I want to mention this here as I find it very crucial to the game until you are fully lawful. As you walk around the town, pick up as much junk (letters, meat, lamps, lanterns, armors, weapons, etc.). Just make sure that your weight does not go over 50%. I would suggest picking up or sending yourself as many letters as you can since they don't take up much if any weight. You will want a lot of these, probably around 70-100. You are probably thinking that this sounds really stupid, but here is the point. If you are not full lawful (32,767 alignment points) and you die, you will drop an item from your inventory. By carrying so many letters, you will usually drop a letter rather than the important item you don't want to lose. Note that this does not guarantee that you will drop one of the items you want, it just improves the statistics of you not dropping it.

If you look in your inventory window (press the Tab key), you will see a map of Silent Caverns, a leather jacket, and a dagger. Put on the leather jacket by double clicking on it, and then do the same with the dagger.

Levels 1 to 4

After familiarizing yourself with the towns you will want to go to the Training areas. In Hidden Valley they are just North of town just outside of the town perimeter. There are a few training dummies that new players can use to level up in the northeastern part of Silence Ground or in Silent Caverns.

There are a lot of Scarecrows or poles (they spin in a circle) that you can attack to gain experience. Walk up to one of the scarecrows or training pole, and start clicking on it to attack it. A trick here is the auto-swing. Click on the scarecrow and hold the mouse button down as you drag the mouse to the chat area at the bottom of the screen. When you release the button, you should be on auto swing and will keep swinging at the scarecrow. You will want to stay here at the training grounds until you get to level 5.

Levels 5 to 10

Now that you have reached level 5, it is time to go fight some monsters. I would familiarize yourself with the area and try to find some areas that have some easier mops such as goblins, kobolds, and orcs in Hidden Valley. It should be noted that Silent Caverns is not totally a newbie area. The mops down in Silent Cavern are "pack-minded" like some of the mops on Talking Island or around Silver Knight Town. Hitting one type of creature will set most of the other creatures of that type to aggressive, and they will attack you with the exception of Werewolves, Stone Golems, and Lizardmen. Also there are many undead creatures in Silent Caverns such as: Zombies, Orc Zombies, Skeletons, Skeleton Archers, and Spartoi. These types of creatures are instantly aggressive toward you and will attack you on sight. They are good for your law, but it's easy to get overwhelmed.

Always monitor the items you have and try to put on better armor and weapons as you get them. As you get around level 7 or 8, you should be able to kill some bigger monsters that may drop better. Wander around the areas and try to kill the Orc Fighters, Orc Archers, Zombies, and Dwarves. Once again, be careful in Silent Cavern as it's very easy to get overwhelmed by packs of mops. You may want to venture into the Hidden Valley Caves to gain some good lawful points and experience. Feel free to join a pledge at any time and start making friends. Taking a few pledge members to a difficult area can be helpful as you can team up on a monster. Shortly after you get to level 12, you will no longer be able to teleport to Hidden Valley, and if you are there, you will be teleported out.

Also of note is a warning about Silver Knight Town. Although you can teleport to Silver Knight town via NPC's in Hidden Valley it may not be wise to do so. Frequently in Silver Knight Town there are packs of Black Knights. Black Knights are instantly aggressive to Dark Elves, and will attack them on sight often ignoring attacks from other players and moving only to attack the Dark Elf. At lower levels it's easy to get yourself killed by coming into Silver Knight town at the wrong moment.

At this point, it is probably best to get a dog. I would personally use Huskies, but recommend a shepherd or a doberman. You can either tame a dog or buy one. For more information on dogs and how to use them, click here. As a side note, please make sure to feed your dog or it will go hungry and leave you. Note that using a dog will take away from the experience that you get, although they will prove to be very helpful in killing bigger monsters.

If you have saved your money, you should be close to getting 5 or 6 thousand adena. Once you get 10,000 adena, I would buy the boneset. It will drastically help your fighting abilities, as you will not get hit as much. If not a bone set, seriously consider getting a gauntlet from Squalid and throwing knives to use in the beginning. With a gauntlet you can still wear a shield, and sometimes it helps to do some damage to a creature before it gets close enough to do some damage to you.

Levels 11 to 20

Once you are teleported out of Hidden Valley, or are no longer able to return to Hidden Valley, it's time to start working on getting your gear together. Silent Caverns provide most of the materials you'll need for all Dark Elf equipment, either through drops, or by Bring Stones. The experience you get in Silent Caverns is fairly decent as well. Once you leave the Dark Elf village via the bridge, you'll start to encounter fairly simple mops, which will provide you with irons, furs, and adena. Some of them even drop some of the better Dark Elf equipment like Dark Robes, Dark cloaks, and Dark Gloves.

Prepare for each hunting trip by making sure you have Lesser Healing Potions, Scroll of Resurrection, and Scrolls of Escape. I would hotkey the red potions and the scrolls of escape in the hotkeys are. If your dog dies, you will want to resurrect him using the scroll of resurrection. Note that these scrolls are expensive. The Scrolls of Escape are different from the Scrolls of Return to Hidden Valley (which you don't need anymore). Scroll of Escape are very critical. They will take you back to the town. The Potions will help you restore HP when you are being injured.

Move around Silent Caverns and get a feel for locations of landmarks and what kind of creatures are out there. The more you move to the west (left) the more challenging the mops are. Remember that undead creatures give you most Law points, as it is important that you become full law as soon as possible. As stated before this is not a simple newbie area, and it is easy to get overwhelmed. Check your targets and be careful what you hit if you don't want to be mobbed by everything on the screen. Collect Bring stones and save them until you complete your level 15 quest. At that time you'll get a spell that will help you to turn Bring Stones into other types of stones used in Dark Elf equipment. You will probably spend a lot of time down in Silent Caverns collecting bring stones as each time you use the purify stone spell, even if the stone doesn't turn to the next level it will disappear. The higher your level, and the higher your Wisdom the more chances you have of actually changing stones to the next level.

Also when you complete the level 15 quest, you'll receive your first Dark Elf equipment as a quest item. The Shadow Mask. This item has a high enchant level and is even used quite often by even some of the higher-level characters.

Levels 21 to 30

You should now be making some decent money and are on your way to success. After level 20 it gets a bit harder to gain experience. You can try your luck in Dragon Valley, which is where you will exit if you go out of the cave on the far left of the Silent Cavern. Personally, I would stay in Silent Caverns and try to get full law before venturing out. Mainland Caves is another good place to kill undead and gain law.

Once you are full lawful, I would use some of your saved money and try to improve on your armor. I have some armor goals below consisting of the items that you are going to want to get. I would suggest working on your AC set first and getting the Dark Elf specialized items first. Once your AC is closer to -30, you can probably start venturing into some more difficult areas. Some people will suggest that you try to get a better weapon first while others will suggest that you get better AC first. It's your choice, but either way you are at a level and should have enough saved cash that it's time to start working on enchanting your items and working to get better items and armor.

Levels 30+

At this point you are probably ready to venture into some of the more difficult hunting spots. The main areas you may want to try hunting are Dragon Valley, Fire Valley, and the Oren Wastelands. These are all good spots to hunt with lots of experience awaiting you. These areas contain some monsters that can be quite aggressive and hurtful. Be careful, but have fun.

I would definitely recommend doing your Level 30 quest as soon as you are able, as it gives you items that are very useful.

Levels 45+

Now that you are level 45 you can take another quest. View the Quest Guide for more details on the quests you can take.

Armor Goals

In my opinion there are two basic types of armor sets for Dark Elves. There is the AC set for those who choose melee type combat, and then there is Dex or Magic type for those who choose to use gauntlets or xbows. The second type also encompasses the more magic using types of dark elves with the high Wisdom.

AC Set:

  • +6 Dark Robe (Increased HP regen)
  • +6 Shadow Mask
  • +6 Shadow Gloves (+1 Con)
  • +4 Shadow Boots (+50 hp)
  • +4 T-shirt
  • +4 Dark Cloak (+30 hp)
  • Orc Amulet or Str Amulet
  • Old or New Belt of Soul

Dex/Magic Set:

  • +6 Dark Robe
  • +4 Dark Headband (+5 Mana regen)
  • +4 Dark Glvoes (+2 to hit with gauntlet/bow)
  • +4 Dark cloak
  • +6 Dark Boots
  • +6 Elven Shield (Can't use while using bow)
  • Wis Amulet or Orc Amulet
  • Old or New Belt of Soul

Weapon Goals

  • +6 Gauntlet
  • +6 Crossbow of Bravery
  • +6 Kaiser Crossbow*
  • +6 Edoryu or Claws of Bravery
  • +6 Kaiser Claws or Edoryu*
  • +6 Sliver Claws or Edoryu

*Note Currently they don't have in the game, but there are plans for them in the future. Kaiser weapons will probably be the best bets when they are actually available to make.

It is up to you on the order that you enchant these items. Depending on what you prefer to hunt, you may not want to plus some before others. This is entirely up to you. Analyze the statistics for each weapon and armor and make the decision on what you like to hunt.

Final Wishes

Good Luck with your new Dark Elf. My words of advice for you are to have lots of patience, constantly hunt (don't stand around talking too much), and have fun. Don't be discouraged by downfalls, but pick yourself up and be determined to get better. The Dark Elf is a very challenging character to play, and very different from any other class.

Enjoy your exploration of Aden!
